Democratic Governors Take the Lead

As New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) took over as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, the governors "unveiled a new strategy for reversing Republican gains that includes putting Democratic organizers in the 38 states that will hold governors’ elections in the next two years," Stateline.org reports.

"Only two states -- Virginia and New Jersey -- will hold gubernatorial elections next year, but 36 governors' seats will be on the 2006 ballot."

As for the Democratic National Committee, the Washington Post notes the governors "endorsed a split role for party leadership, calling for a model that includes a national spokesman and a chief executive officer."

The AP reports former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen said "that she will not seek the chairmanship."
