Nervous About NukesAugust 16, 2004In May, the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration announced that it would upgrade security at the Los Alamos Laboratory, including moving nuclear materials away from the vulnerable area TA-18—which had failed several security tests. But since then, the NNSA has been dragging its feet—even though the University of California, which manages the lab, has proposed completing the nuclear move immediately. The Project on Government Oversight has called NNSA's bluff in a letter to Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, citing an e-mail from an NNSA official saying that the removal process could stretch to 2015.
