Media Misleads On Social SecurityDecember 14, 2004If you were to take the news coming from the major networks as fact, then you'd have every reason to believe that Social Security is in crisis, that the system is hopelessly botched, and that Americans will suffer if it's not changed. That's because the news coverage of Social Security is sticking like glue to the Bush administration's talking points. FAIR pointed out that a recent report on CNN focused only on the "trouble," and cited only sources whose views were in keeping with that line. And on Meet The Press, moderator Tim Russert opened a question for Howard Dean with the statement "Social Security faces a crisis." But that's not a view that's universally held. Plenty of reputable groups and people think Social Security is just fine—and wasn't even on the political radar until President Bush made it the highlight of his coming second term. Take action with FAIR and MediaMatters and tell the networks that the American people deserve discourse about the Social Security issue—not administration spin.
