New Faces, Same Attack

November 29, 2004

With a new GOP-controlled Senate and a Republican House, a plan to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is even more imminent than before. In mid-November, Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) said that now "is the best chance we've had" to start drilling. Despite the fact that public-opinion polling has shown repeatedly that most Americans believe there are some wild lands so unique that they must be protected, special interests and oil allies in Congress continue to press for drilling. The Wilderness Society has launched an all-out battle to keep the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge unspoiled, even in the face of a legislature with newly strengthened opposition. ACT NOW
