A few years ago, the most prominent environmental scientists in the world met to do an audit of Planet Earth's holdings called the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Last week, they released the results: more than 60 percent of the world's ecosystem resources have been used up or are currently being degraded. That includes fresh water, fisheries, air and water regulation, and the regulation of regional climate, natural hazards and pests. The data from the 95 countries represented in the assessment shows it's unlikely we can make progress eradicating poverty and hunger and improving health unless the ecosystems on which humanity relies are protected. The good news: It's possible to turn around the damage by using specific programs and policy initiatives. The bad news: Hardly any of these policies are underway. SEE THE REPORT
