Turns out it's not really that surprising that the bankruptcy bill passed with such ease—even among Democrats, a significant number of whom supported the bill that will make it tougher for ordinary people to recover from bankruptcy. Opensecrets.org looked at the numbers and found that Congress members who voted for the bill received on average twice as much in campaign contributions from the credit card and finance industries as representatives who voted against the bill. There was a similar trend among senators, among whom bankruptcy bill supporters averaged $51,200 in industry donations, versus only $20,200 given to bill opponents. SEE THE DATA
