While we admit that this report is even wonkier than usual—it's from a very selective scientific journal—the results are simply too important to overlook. Research conducted by scientists at the Mount Sinai Medical Center quantified, for the first time, exactly how dangerous mercury is to our children—and to our economy. The study, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, found that between 300,000 and 600,000 children each year will have lowered IQs as a result of exposure to mercury, and the United States will lose $8.7 billion annually in potential earnings. President Bush's "Clear Skies Act" would relax regulations and allow much of this damage to continue. Skip right to pages 17-20 if you've only got time for the results. SEE THE REPORT
