Mosul: No Fallujah

Robert Dreyfuss

December 21, 2004

The United States is preparing to bring back the 300,000 residents of Fallujah to their shattered city, and there is still scattered fighting there. In the end, the battle of Fallujah will be nothing compared to what seems to be emerging as the battle of Mosul.

Unlike Fallujah—basically a small town—Mosul is Iraq's third largest city, with two million people.
The attack there today is therefore all the more devastating. It's a sign that in Mosul things are out of control.

An MSNBC report says: "Gunmen have roamed parts of Mosul with ease in recent weeks." Iraqi security forces in Mosul have scattered every time the insurgents have attacked, and apparently scores of police have been murdered execution style. Obviously, the possibility of holding elections in Mosul is in doubt.
According to the latest, the dead include at least 13 U.S. soldiers, 22 in all. Read the MSNBC report here.
